Community room or private room?
Community acupuncture treats several people at once in reclining chairs in a quiet shared room. That's how clinics keep prices on a sliding scale, and it makes weekly visits realistic. Teaching clinics give you a private room with a supervised intern, for a fixed low price.
What the evidence says
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, acupuncture may help with several pain conditions, including back or neck pain, knee pain from osteoarthritis and postoperative pain, and there's some evidence for seasonal allergy symptoms and nausea from cancer treatment. Complications are relatively rare when it's done properly with sterile, single-use needles, and it shouldn't replace seeing a clinician about a health problem (NCCIH).
